Mulleres na Lexicografía
María José Rincón González
Spanish
Sevilla
María José Rincón was educated at the Universidad de Sevilla, where she specialized in linguistics and lexicography and earned a doctorate in Hispanic Philology. She completed postgraduate studies at the School of Hispanic Lexicography, an elite program of the Real Academia Española (RAE) and the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (ASALE). She later moved to the Dominican Republic and taught classes and gave conferences at various universities in Spain and the Americas, focusing on the history of the language and the methodology of dictionary creation. As a specialist in the Dominican variety of Spanish, in 2011 she was elected a full member of the Academia Dominicana de la Lengua (ADL), where she held key roles such as treasurer and coordinator of technical commissions. Additionally, she is a corresponding member of the RAE, with which she actively collaborates from the Dominican Republic on pan-Hispanic projects. She is the director of the Instituto Guzmán Ariza de Lexicografía (IGALEX), the first in the Caribbean dedicated exclusively to professional lexicographical research, where she also works to improve the use of the language in the media. In addition to her institutional roles, she was the lexicographic coordinator for the "Diccionario del español dominicano" (2013), a work that, for the first time, rigorously documented the country's own lexicon. She also worked as a reviewer and collaborator on fundamental ASALE works, such as the "Diccionario panhispánico de dudas" (DPD) and the "Diccionario de americanismos". She maintains a constant presence in the national press (Diario Libre) with articles that teach the proper use of the language in an engaging and accessible way spreading knowledge.

Although she was born in Sevilla and still has her Andalusian accent, she has been living in the Dominican Republic since 1992. She defines her identity as a blend where language is the common thread. One of her main areas of interest is the Taíno words that passed into Spanish and that we use all over the world today. Additionally, she is known for her constant presence on social media as “Letra Zeta,” a reference to her position at the Dominican Academy of the Language, where she answers linguistic questions in a simple and entertaining way.
