Career description

Irene Renau earned a degree in Hispanic Philology from the Universitat Jaume I (Castelló) in 2001. Subsequently, in 2012, she received her doctorate from Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) with the dissertation “Gramática y diccionario: Las construcciones con se en las entradas verbales del diccionario de español como lengua extranjera ,” supervised by Paz Battaner. Her intersectional academic background combines traditional philology and lexicography with computational linguistics and corpus linguistics. Since 2009, she has held various teaching positions at universities such as Ramon Llull, Pompeu Fabra, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV) in Chile, where she has worked since 2014 at the Institute of Literature and Language Sciences, serving as an associate professor since 2018. In the field of research, she specialized in the use of large text databases to extract lexical information. She collaborated for years at the Institute for Applied Linguistics (IULA) of Pompeu Fabra University until her move to Chile. There, she led several projects funded by the FONDECYT fund on the development of autonomous tools for detecting changes in word meanings; in addition, she directs the corpus linguistics research group and collaborates with the GRIAL group. One of his most notable works is the adaptation of the CPA (Corpus Pattern Analysis) method to Spanish, which allows for mapping the meanings of words based on usage patterns in large volumes of text. He has also conducted fundamental studies on neology, analyzing how new words are born, their entry into the dictionary, and how they vary between Spanish from Spain and from America. Currently, she focuses much of her work on improving the way information is presented in electronic dictionaries using the Pattern Dictionary of English Verbs method adapted for Spanish, which consists of analyzing real usage patterns to achieve more precise definitions.
