Career description

Thekla Hammar was a Swedish translator and lexicographer whose contributions to Swedish-French and French-Swedish bilingual lexicography are considered essential to this day. Hammar was the first female student at Karlskrona high school when she graduated in 1891. After completing her undergraduate studies at Uppsala University in 1896, she started a career in education as a teacher. In 1922, she published her Swedish-French phrasebook dictionary, while her subsequent Swedish-French dictionary, published in 1936, gained significant popularity and was widely utilized in secondary schools throughout Sweden. She also published the French-Swedish phrasebook "Petit dictionnaire français-suédois" in 1950 and translated works by the first female Nobel prize winner Selma Lagerlöf and other Nordic authors into French. Upon the outbreak of the First World War, she found herself in Paris and took a job as a nurse within the French military.
