Ieda Maria Alves has a degree in Literature from the Catholic University of Santos, a Master's degree in Modern Literature from the Académie de Lettres de Besançon in France, a PhD in Linguistics from Université Paris 3 – Sorbonne Nouvelle, and a professorship from the University of São Paulo. She has also completed postdoctoral internships at several French universities, including Université Paris 3 – Sorbonne Nouvelle, Université Paris 7 – Denis Diderot, Université Paris 13 – Villetaneuse, Institut de la Langue Française in Nancy, Centre de Terminologie et de Néologie in Paris and Université Laval in Quebec, Canada. Furthermore, she is currently a full professor in the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Human Sciences at the University of São Paulo. Moreover, she is an expert in linguistics, specialising in lexical studies and working in the following areas: neology, lexicology, morphology, terminology and lexicography.

Alves has made two significant cultural contributions. In 2006, she played a key role in establishing the Museum of the Portuguese Language, focusing on the influence of English and French on Portuguese. In 2021, she took part in rebuilding the museum, once again assisting in the same area, as the museum suffered a major fire in December 2015. Additionally, she was also president of the Executive Committee of the Ibero-American Terminology Network and coordinator of the Lexicology and Lexicography and Terminology working groups of the National Association of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Literature and Linguistics. She led the Linguistic Studies Group of the State of São Paulo. Notably, in 2013, she received a Scientific-Academic Tutoring Award from the University of São Paulo and, in 2005, she was a corresponding member of the Brazilian Academy of Philology.
