Ilse Feinauer completed her master's degree at Stellenbosch University, where she also completed her doctorate in 1988, publishing her thesis on Afrikaans syntax (Die fáses van die sintaktiese ontwikkeling van Afrikaans). She is currently a professor and chair of the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch at Stellenbosch University, where she holds the prestigious "Tot and Anet Vosloo" Chair in Language Practice (Translation, Editing, and Lexicography) in Afrikaans. She is also the coordinator of the postgraduate programs in Translation and Lexicography at the same faculty. Her research focuses mainly on the sociolinguistics of translation and its importance in cultural spaces. She is also co-author of a fundamental work for teaching Afrikaans, Basiswoordeboek van Afrikaans (Basic Dictionary of Afrikaans), and one of the key figures in the connection between European and African lexicography through her collaboration in the European Master in Lexicography (EMLex). She holds important leadership and management positions, such as President of the South African Academy of Science and Arts (Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns), Vice President of the African Lexicography Association (AFRILEX), Member of the Executive Board of EST (European Society for Translation Studies), and Founder of ATSA (Association for Translation Studies in Africa). In 2022, she won the Chancellor's Award from Stellenbosch University for excellence in research and her continued academic career.

Ilse Feinauer stands out for her social commitment, using translation as a tool for recovering historical memory in South African museums. She was the first African academic to join the board of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST), establishing herself as the main bridge between European and African lexicography through programs such as EMLex.
