Tinatin Margalitadze
ENG 1956 (Tbilisi, Georgia) Tinatin Margalitadze is a Georgian lexicographer currently living and working in Tbilisi, Georgia. She has dedicated her professional life to the field of lexicography that she assumes as a great passion.
ENG Tinatin Margalitadze studied Linguistics and English at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) in 1972-1977. She did her postgraduate studies at TSU and in 1983 defended her candidate’s thesis (PhD) “Structural Semantics and Characterization of Adjectives in Modern English”. She believes that her research on semantics, namely, polysemy and polysemous models of words, paved her way to lexicography. Based on that research, she even created her own dictionary entry model. In 1980s she was invited as an editor of the English-Georgian dictionary material, compiled at the Department of English Philology of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Since then, she has developed her academic career at the Department of English Philology at TSU. At the same time, in 1995 – 2020 she was a Research Director of Lexicographic Centre at TSU. Having bilingual lexicography as one of the research interests, she thought that knowledge of a foreign language was not enough for the compilation of a bilingual dictionary, thus she started teaching a course in lexicography – “Introduction to Lexicography” - first at the BA level. Soon after this, she launched MA (2009) and PhD (2011) programs in Lexicography at TSU. In November 2020 Tinatin Margalitadze moved to Ilia State University, where she founded the “Centre for Lexicography and Language Technologies”. At this University she also launched the MA program “Lexicography, Terminology and Language Technologies” in 2022. At the doctoral level, together with her colleagues, she developed a PhD module “Electronic Lexicography”, which is the fourth module in the PhD program “Digital Humanities”. Through her career she has been an editor in chief and publisher of various bilingual (English-Georgian), general and specialized, dictionaries.
