Revisiting language standardisation
Abstract: In this talk, I will socially, politically, and historically contextualise the processes of linguistic standardisation and critically analyse the complexity involved in the codification and development of standard varieties in different linguistic ecologies. The focus is on how increasingly multilingual and multicultural societies challenge the linguistic ideologies promoted by standardisation.

Beyond Slang: Unpacking the self-perception of Coloured Speech
Abstract: My paper will explore the contrast between Standard Afrikaans and Kaaps, a variety spoken primarily by the Coloured community in Cape Town. The research highlights how speakers of Kaaps often perceive their language as informal and less prestigious compared to Standard Afrikaans, which is linked to historical and racial ideologies from the apartheid era. My findings show that linguistic labels and attitudes toward these varieties are deeply tied to issues of identity and social stratification.
